VIN numbers

Post by artadot »

I know this has been discussed on the forum but I at times need to keep an vin number under 2 different customers. I think it would be great to have the alert pop up but give an option whether we want to keep the vin with the original customer or create it a second time under the new customer. I like to have options :)

If this becomes an option again it will be a nitemare. Some of us here have a habit of having a car under Johanson and Joe Hanson and Johansen and Joe Hansen. The mandatory VIN thing was the worst thing ever, when we first got it, but looking back it has really saved my...ah.....bacon, many times

We made VIN # unique as license plate is to help eliminate duplicate vehicle records in the database.

A great tip was posted here a few days ago: http://managerforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=124&t=11404

I realize it is very easy to accidentally duplicate customers and vehicles. Not being able to duplicate the vin is a great way to prevent that, but the license plate is also a way to prevent a duplication. I saw the post you mentioned and am familiar with that process, I have had to use it many times, but I have vehicles that need to remain in 2 different customer vehicle banks due to our used car sales transactions. For now I just delete the first number in the vin, haven't had it come back to bite me in the ..... as yet, so I will continue with that process.

When you change ownership and back again, vehicle history is retained to the correct owners at the time of repair. No need to duplicate vins as history is intact.
