2000 Dodge 2500 - 2WD Diesel 47RE Code
Our shop has been working on a 2000 Dodge 2500 Diesel 2WD with 47RE transmission. The problem is that the vehicle hunts gears and sometimes there is a late shift to 3rd.
What we have done: Overhaul the transmission which had serious problems, replacing the torque converter, replaced the governor sensor and solenoids, replaced the internal wiring harness, cleaned and sautered grounds, replaced the computer, checked wires, replaced valve body. Yet the problem persists. The code is for low voltage. Disconnecting the alternator made no difference at all. The fuel system was dirty, but we have cleaned it out and replaced fuel filter as well.
We have taken the transmission out and reopened it and rechecked it thoroughly and then reinstalled.
What can you suggest? We have tried everything we or others can think of.

Re: Need fix for 2000 Dodge 2500 Diesel
47re shifts by hydraulic pressure just like the 727; however, the 47re has an electronic governor pressure solenoid that is controlled by the ECM. You need to see about 2 psi for every mph until it shifts into 3rd gear. After that you will see about 127 psi gov pressure which is normal. 3-4 is controlled by the ecm and 3-4/tcc solenoid. My question is what speed and what gear is "hunting", and what code are you retreiving?

Re: 2000 Dodge 2500 - 2WD Diesel 47RE Code
Updated report from technician -
NO codes currently being set - for awhile low voltage was reported but that code no longer appears
all input sensors seem to be working properly
it hunts at about 48-60 mph for 3rd gear
no speed sensor fluctuation
no governor fluctuation
TPS is steady
temperature sensor looks good
no apparent cause for it to hunt 3rd gear.
Haven't figured out how to edit/create my profile yet.

Re: 2000 Dodge 2500 - 2WD Diesel 47RE Code
can't help with the profile but maybe with the issue. first make sure all the grounds are good especially the ground for the pcm. like william stated if the pressure is off it won't shift. is the engine struggling? at this point i'de re-burn the pcm. i've also had issues with the through plug on the casing. with your scanner watch the crank sensor and see if it's constant. if you're able to watch the wave pattern it would be a plus. even a simple bar graph would help with a pattern fault. if this has an issue with a thrust bearing causing a crank walk it could be you're underlying issue. metal filings can be on the sensor causing it to misread and not be able to maintain proper timing. I've seen injector pumps failing causing among other things shift problems. if the power isn't there it's not going to shift. in rare cases (i don't recommend it all the time) i take vehicles on the lot with plenty of room and power brake them to get a feel for the torque. if it flattens out and starts to fail you're issue may be in the mill.

Ok, if it's 3-4 hunt you will have massive RPM fluctuation. Not 50-100 RPM which is the converter locking and unlocking, which is 99% of what I see. While monitoring the scanner during driving my question is the computer telling the trans to shift 4-3 & 3-4? If so and this is unnecessary shifting then you need to investigate why the ECM is requesting these shifts. My guess would be TPS or worn linkage/bellcrank at the engine. TV adjustment comes to mind but I'm sure thats all ready been checked.
Laugh at me now but loose and dirty cables at the battery cause most of these concerns. They must be "hospital" clean and tight.

Re: 2000 Dodge 2500 - 2WD Diesel 47RE Code
When working for Dodge I had a similiar problem. Found the field wire for the alternator run to close to the APP sensor wire. As the ecm fielded the alt. it created a "false" signal (magnetic field) on the APP causing wierd shift patterns. The changes weren't noticeable on a scanner, sample rate was to slow. Was able to catch it on a lab scope. Rerouted field wire and all was good. Cant remember the year think it was a 99 or 2000. MIght be worth a look. HTH Jeff.

Still waiting on an answer if it's 3-4 shifting or in/out of lock up. What is the rpm change?
