2004 Dodge Ram 2500 - 5.9L Dsl Cranking TSBs?

Post by nokomisauto »

I have an '04 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 5.9 Diesel. We have no codes on the engine. Fuel pressures are to manufacture specs and battery & starter tested fine. We are experiencing long crank time when hot or cold. We've seen bulletins where they want us to remove the computer and install a new computer from Chrysler and flash the new computer with the new software.

Have any of you experienced this problem and what did you do to fix it? This truck has been at multiple shops to repair this problem including dealership. I would like to find information to fix this problem for the customer. I'm gunshy to try the computer by the bulletin - afraid this may not fix the problem unless anyone else has done this to fix the problem. I want to be confident this would work to fix the problem.

Thanks! Ray

How many miles are on this truck and were the fuel injectors ever replaced?

First thing in a situation like this that comes to my mind is a high return rate on the high pressure fuel rail. This means that the injectors are not sealing internally as they should and fuel pressure is not building as rapidly as it should thereby resulting in extended crank time till fuel pressure builds up to the point where they can fire. This problem develops on injectors that have many miles on them.

It has 138000 miles one injector was replace because of alot of black smoke and smoke is gone now but the exhaust seams raw fuel at idle and it will burn your eyes in sort time of idling.

If this truck was at our shop I would remove the injectors and have them tested. This post verifies that injector/fuel pressure is the problem area.

Leaking injectors usually do not set any codes but can create the symptoms described here.

Voltage should be 1.3 at the sensor if not it could be getting to much return flow. Im with you it is most likely(90+%) injectors but I would like to know what he has tested and he needs to know how to check it.

Make sure to remind the owner to regularly put some fuel injector/fuel conditioner in the fuel. This helps to lubricate the injector pump and injectors.
