2001 Dodge R2500 - 5.9L Diesel P1763 FIXED
2001 Dodge R2500 - 5.9L Diesel P1763 FIXED
Truck went to transmission shop for rebuild came to me with a P1763, gov pressure high. When you start the truck and take off it shifts fine, after 30 seconds at cruise, MIL comes on and governor pressure stays at 110 psi, with gov press regulator locked at .8% duty cycle until key off. Transmission shop re-replaced solenoid pack and trans wiring harness, with same problem, and sent it to us to install a PCM & reflash. Problem still exists. With wheels off the ground, I can duplicate problem by accelerating to + 45 mph in 3rd. After 30 seconds if you decel, gov pressure won't drop. At 40 mph, with TCC locked and duty cycle @ .8%, if you decel pressure will drop. If you go over about 45 mph for 30 seconds pressure will not drop. Wire continuity seems to be fine, connectors are clean. Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: 2001 Dodge R2500 - 5.9L Diesel P1763
Good Morning and Welcome to the Forum. Glad to have ya with us.
We have seen this issue in the past. At times it was a wiring/connector issue and also the governor pressure sensor can set this code. I am not aware of any way to check the sensor except to replace it with a known good one. It seems the governor pressure sensors have a high failure rate.

A real quickie here here. There is an issue with a wiring harness routing that can effect the transmission shift. There is a tech bulletin on it. I have one of these beasts and on occasion i need to disconnect the battery for a few minutes and then all is well for a few weeks. I also believe there may be the need for a reburn of the bcm.

On second thought. When the transmission was rebuilt, did they install a shift kit it or use a performance valve body? Either of these will raise governor pressure that the PCM does not like.

From Gib's brother,
This problem was resolved by taking truck to a different transmission shop. Pressure was going too high and setting code P1763. Transmission would then go into default mode. Second shop set pressure to proper spec and no more problem.

Re: 2001 Dodge R2500 - 5.9L Diesel P1763
Ive got one in now same model and engine that stalls when its hot and put in to drive or reverse. Feels like the convertor locking up and killing engine. No codes. If coolers are bypassed still does it. Also still does it with electric to trans unplugged. It has to be hot for it to do it like 190 + degree engine and trans temps. Wiggle tested connector. Checked all gounds and cleaned them. Installed new jasper unit new chrysler cooler same issue. Jasper went through tests with me and say new one has internal problem to? Ideas?

Re: 2001 Dodge R2500 - 5.9L Diesel P1763
I bow to Jasper. However, i would put a pressure guage on the return line and check pressure and the pressure returning to the transmission. On some of these there is a flow valve or filter inline that can and will cause issues. I believe the valve is bolted to the crossmembe and has to be looked for. Is there a temp sensor that is faulty causing a false positive and transmission being tossed into limp?
On mine, the wiring harness routing causes all sorts of problems. I googled the issue i was having and it lead me to a websight that is for the Cummins Dodge and there are a list of symptoms and resolutions. I love this truck and get a real kick out of someone trying to jump me at a stop sign. They're a bit shocked when this rusty black truck keeps them from passing and the road is running out.

Re: 2001 Dodge R2500 - 5.9L Diesel P1763 FIXED
The check valve is built into the warm up cooler on the block. It flows and if bypassed it still acts up. If I disconnect all elect from trans it still stalls hard. Even in limp mode. It does have to be hot to do it but even whne it doesnt stall it occasionally shift really really hard into gear like jerk you in the seat hard.

A point here. If this has the lift pump on the engine may i strongly suggest installing the update package eliminating the external pump and installing the in tank unit. Fairly simple and a noticeable power increase. I've personally never seen an injector pump fail unless it's been run dry a few times.

It was new pump we did a few hundred miles ago. It gota new lift pump at that time also. the lift pump is working fine. Not alot of info on diagnosising the electrical part of the inj pump.

I've found a few of these sucking air prior to the engine mounted lift pump. This is why i try to push the tank lift pump. It's a pusher and will leak fuel as apposed to sucking air.

I seriously doubt there is a transmission issue on this one. What is engine rpm at idle? I suspect there is a problem with the injectors. I know this sounds illogical but we have seen this issue before on the 5.9s. How many miles on this truck?

Re: 2001 Dodge R2500 - 5.9L Diesel P1763 FIXED
It had 90K It was the inj pump its gone fixed. It never would get to much air in the fuel to restart right away. It had power and ground to pump. There is no info on the buss lines going to pump and what to look for there. The rpm at idle was around 800. The tps is not ajustable. The thing would shoot to 100 % engine load and die hard jump forward like a tcc lock up. A buddy at chrysler looked at it with us for a second opinion and he swore it was torqu convertor but there was no way to have 3 bad ones in a row or at least it wouldnt be likely. Would an injector stall the engien that hard? If so how?
