Daily Backup Procedure?

Post by Pauls Automotive »

Hi everyone. I was wondering what other people do in the way of backups. Here is my issue. Apparently you can only backup from the host (at least that is what I'm getting out of this.) My host is a stand lone device that is cumbersume to access and the program only backs up when you enter or leave it. We never access this computer so we never really launch it hence it doesn't back up unless I manually go into and exit the program. Am I missing something? Is there any other way or work station set up that will allow me to back up without going to the host or is there a setting on the host I'm missing?

You're not missing anything. You can only manually back up from the host.

The Mitchell1 DPR product automatically backs up offsite. It works and I've had to restore from it once. Didn't lose anything.

I'm beta testing the next generation of back up from Mitchel1l called Manager SE Connection. This is really cool as it backs up in real time as you use the program and the restore process is said to be even faster than with DPR.

I'd recommend setting the host to back up upon close and at the end of the day, start and close the program with your thumb drive plugged into the host. We use 2 thumbs and alternate weeks with them so we can go back 2 weeks and look at things if need be.

YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY BACK UPS!!!!

That strategy started with SE and the new database structure. My guess is it would take too long to move those files over the network, so they limited the back up to the host where those files reside. As it is now the back up on SE is longer than with 5.9.
