I used to hook up the scanner and run codes and do a bit of diag. at "No Charge" because that's what everyone else in town was doing. Yea I know if Billy jumps off the bridge!! Always got "AZ does it for free" line. Soooo....I bought an inexpensive code reader. Now when someone complains about the fee I throw the code checker on it, read the codes and give them the possibilities. Same as AZ. Now I explain that to determine the EXACT cause of the problem will require time. Most will pay at that point...the others can kick rocks! And to add to that I WILL NOT give them details, only a rough idea of what might be a problem.

We charger $59.95 for us to hook up the scanner, record all codes set, and any pending or in history. Depending on the code we also will do a quick visual inspection in case its a vacuum hose that has come off or something along that line and we will do some research and then advise them from there how much diag time we will need to determine the issue.
