2007 Chev 1500 Express - P/S Pump Shaft Shearing Off?

Post by LB »

Hi
Need some help here.

2007 Chev Express 1500 van with a 4.3L, vehicle came into shop after driver complained of a LOUD bang noise. Removed power steering pump to find the shaft inside sheared off. Replaced pump with 'aftermarket' brand, vehicle came in hours later with same thing happened. Driver said he lost his power steering and brake pedal, no bang noise this time.

Anyone with ideas?

thanks again

Glad it's not here. I have never heard off this failure. Pump pressure? Restrictred line? Noise?
Uncle PETA said I could come back.

It was the same idea as Wheelz post

Van came in with ps pump shaft broke off vanes in side replaced pump and belt. Ps worked great when van left shop with no other issues. Less than 50 miles van came back with shaft broke off new pump vains. I do not have any ps pressure gages but dont want to put in another pump to have the same problem. To me it seems that if a line was plug or had a restriction the ps system would not work very well or even make noise. Does any one have any ideas or ran into this before any help would be great.

I just called GM and that particular dealership has never sold one. It was described exactly the same as the post done here by Wheelz. just wierd.
thanks for checking those other sites for me, it is appreciated.

Actually, this is very common up in my area. We've seen tons of them. NHTSA Campaign ID number : 05V005000 covers quite a few of them. Your particular vehicle doesn't appear to be covered. It's crappy pumps.

well that really sucks. I emailed the company we got the pump from, hoping to hear something back. Just really bad, that we already billed the customer and they paid and we now have warranty issues, not to mention the price difference between dealership and aftermarket is huge. ;( .

I only use new ps pumps, gear boxes and racks. I think a1 cardone makes crappy products.

Just get another pump and install it. Take care of the customer and deal with the warranty. I only use AC Delco on those.

I first realized that back in the mid 90's. Got a reman dist for chrysler 2.2 turbo and after two weeks it came in on hook with the timing turned all the way retarded as far as it would go. When I tried to turn it to the correct possistion, it was real hard to turn and as soon as I fired it up, it went back around to retard. Replaced it with another and it lasted about one week and did the same thing, Third one was good for one week as well. After the third one, I got a used one and took it and the last reman apart. The used one had two bushings in the housing for the shaft to turn in and the reman only had one, it could not take the strain and was seizing up on the shaft. I took the innards out of the reman and put in the housing with two bushings and never had no more problems with it.
Working hard to prove the Green Team can do it with the best of 'em.

like rich said, i see a lot of these. there was a recall a few years ago on pump shafts failing. the ones that survived with faulty shafts are showing up as remans now. i'll only use new on applications like this one. the pump is a bit of a pain to do and i sure don't want to deal with multiple replacements.

We've seen this also. GM had a problem with the pumps, many of the affected pumps have made it into to core supply and the remanufacturers are using them. The shaft breakage seems to be more prevalent on vehicles with hydroboost, but the pump components fit nearly all GM truck pumps through the 90's and early 2000's so they're showing up on models without hydroboost now. We've even had a AC Delco unit fail this way, suspect they got a faulty core shaft before they made a change in production (I've been told by AC Delco rep that current production of reman units has new shaft).

we have run into the same thing with the pickup trucks. we were getting reman from a local supplier. upon a few seconds after start up and moving wheel shaft would shear off. now i go straight to gm for any ps pump. the amount of money saved going aftermarket ive found is not worth the headache
