Truck comes in with damaged head, broken cam and phaser.
We replaced head, cam, both phasers, both actuators, timing chains, guides and tensioners. After having the timing cover off three times, I am sure the timing is right. After driving for some distance the cam phaser sticks in full retard. Idle is very rough. If you shut off the engine, it will reset and run okay upon restarting. We have switched parts side to side, but problem stays on bank 2.
Any thoughts?

Re: 2005 Ford F250 5.4L - Cam Phaser Sticks
These engines are not one of Ford's better ones. When one comes in, I usually highly recommend a new engine, Jasper or OEM. I got burnt too often trying to work on them. Kinda like what you are experiencing. Yeah, I know, what I have said doesn't solve your problem.
Like the previous post mentioned - oil pressure. The oil pumps used on these engines are, at best, marginally operational. And if there is any wear in the engine that affects oil pressure and volume to the engine, since the cam phasers are among the highest point in the engine, they are the parts that see the problem first.

The new head was defective. We replaced the head and the problem was resolved.

Another stark reminder that new does not always equal good. It doesnt happen real often but just enough to remind us of that. Thanks for the FIX.steppinlarry wrote:The new head was defective. We replaced the head and the problem was resolved.
