Our shop has a 2003 Excursion (1fmsu43p3eb56232 6.0L) with crank sensor and cam sensor codes set when cranking engine; will start on occaision.

Not a diesel shop, customer has had it to ford dealers not able to find anything. We installed new Cam sensor, drove away, month later comeback with same issue. Called a ford tech for a little help if they have seen repeated problems with this and answer was no.

He did advise cam & crank codes could set and these may have nothing to do with the problem.

Prior to your year model Ford had a shim to go behind the cam sensor due to close tolerance. Are there any witness marks on the old sensor?

i have a ford truck on the lot with a similar issue. ford claims it needs a crank shaft. they claim there is an issue with the toner ring that the crank sensor reads.

Please check thrust bearing end gap on boyth those engines as we have had to replace bearings a few times!
We have also replace multiple crank sensors on this model. We always replace in pairs cam and crank!.
