2006 Dodge Caravan - 2.4L Oil Seal Leak

Post by 92zman »

We have a van here that came in with a bad oil leak. Checked out and found that the front oil seal had some how came loose and was leaking oil from there. After pulling apart we put a new oil pump because that is where the seal goes. So we replaced the seal oil pump timing kit about 40 days ago. Today the van comes back in leaking from the same place. Wanted to know if anyone has seen this and might know what to do. Have thought about gluing the seal in but if something had to be done to it in the future would not be able to remove seal..

van is a 2006 Dodge caravan with a 2.4L

thanks

maybe try knurling the seat where the seal goes. Take a punch and make several little indentations all around the surface. the indentations will also make protrusions around each hole. wouldnt hurt also to put a little rtv black on the outside of seal as well, it will still be easily removeable.

Any time I have repeat seals pushing out I test crankcase pressure. Is PCV working and is there to much blow-by?

I do the same thing as Ric. However, I've learned the hard way so now when I see a seal blown out of the housing I notify the customer that this is unusual and usually means there is something that caused it.

Got the van back in checked for a blockage. Did not find any. Did do a motor flush but it came out clean. Put in a new pcv and opened up the engine fresh air vent. When i put the seal back in i put RVT on the seal. Just hope then that will do the job. Did see then the motor did have some blow by but not that much. Hoping then the seal will stay in this time.

Years ago I had a 2.6 engine that was pushing out seals and I finally drilled 4 holes around the edge at 12,3,6, and 9. I screwed sheet metal screws with washers that caught the edge of the seal. It kept it in for the 6 years the delivery service had it. Being old school I never use RTV or any other sealer on seals when I install them. On a quick point here, are you using O.E.M. seals ? Had a few issues with this before.
