2006 Sprinter 2.7 Diesel

Post by ricmorin »

Looking for a little information on this engine as I'm not familiar with it.

Subject vehicle is one we've serviced for a while for a local plumber. Was towed in when they heard a loud bang on the highway and the engine quit. Cranks over with no compression. Looking in the oil fill cap and can see the upper timing gear located on the exhaust cam shattered/ no longer present. Chain is slack. Not good.

Is this an interference engine? Is this failure common? Anything to look out for? SI shows a lot of special service tools that I don't have. Source for rebuilt engines?

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

Not sure if the problem with this engine is common on these Sprinters, however, by what you are describing, it is engine replacement time. We have discovered that a good used engine is difficult to find although Jasper has a listing for this engine.

My thinking as well. This has 200k on it. No telling where all those little pieces went. My lack of familiarity with this engine is why I'm consulting with my colleagues on this one. I don't want to oversell this repair.

Thank you for your input.

I've spent a bit of time working on these. When I get a break I'll give you a call. Easier to go over this one.
never argue with a fool, they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience
