are you getting a tach reading while cranking? if not suspect a crank sensor. crank sensor controls spark, cam sensor deals with injector timing. i've also replaced more than a few pcm's on these. i've also had a few issues with the plug at the end of the lead from the ignition switch.

Just my thought here, I'm not a tech, don't play one on TV, and even if I had the knowledge the hands just couldn't do it. Anyway, we had a 99 about five years ago, same thing and the guys couldn't figure it out, ended up thinking it was the computer, had it towed to the dealer - key needed to be reprogrammed.

While cranking with scanner attached to check for rpm signal from crank sensor, scanner loses communication.

Scanner loseing comm when cranking sounds like the ign switch, had to replace one on a 97 max last week for the same problem.

do you have a rpm reading before you loose communication? a communication failure during crank may be from a low battery or a faulty ground at or within the pcm. i've had enough pcm failures on these to feel comfortable replacing them. no more second and third guessing............

I don't mean to appear a complete moron, but it has two crank sensors. Are we talking about the one in front or on the side towards the rear?
