2005 Toyota RAV4 L - P0442

Post by John C. »

Disclosure - I am not a tech.

First pulled P0442 a couple of months ago. Cleared it, sent customer on her way. About a month ago, P0442 came back with P0456, customer was in a rush (she said she couldn't come back for a week or so), we ordered her a new gas cap, and replaced it on 8/20. Light came back on end of last week, customer dropped off this morning, with just the P0442.

With the exception of one weird situation (04 Tacoma - don't ask), gas cap has taken care of it with every Toyota we come across, least according to what we can find in our history records.

This morning smoke tested system, found no leaks. Mark (Tech) says, "everything is working."

Thoughts? Ideas?

Here's how I tackle these....

First a visual inspection. Then I actuate all the solenoids with the scan tool. If all click I command the vent valve closed and pressure it up with a smoke machine. You need a machine with a flow gauge to catch these 'small leaks'.

So........how exactly did he check everything and with what tooling?

Yes, to all in bold. Yes, our machine has a gauge, scanner is a Modis.

He's wondering if it may need to be reflashed?

Not that I'm aware of. If all testing shows nothing, I usually suspect a faulty solenoid. Sometimes it takes 50 actuations before it will fail.

The two biggest failure items I see are vent valves and the bypass valve. Usually they are rusted and quite swollen.

Sorry for the late jump in on this one. I agree with the valve option leaning towards the vent valve.
never argue with a fool, they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

Thanks guys, that's where Mark was leaning AND that was also the same suggestion from one of our "Toyota people". Customer is due for inspection, in November, and knowing her, she'll put it off until then, but we'll be sure to post the results.

For the record, our main Toyota dealership keeps on top of their inventory, and they keep nothing in stock that doesn't move at least on a somewhat-regular basis... they keep no EVAP components in stock for this vehicle. Cept of course gas caps (HA - even I know the gas cap is part of EVAP  ).

Replaced the valves AND the canister. Toyota said they'd be happy to sell us just the valves, but we'd be calling back soon enough for the canister. Anyway, installed (more importantly - paid for) and passed MA state inspection. Everybody goes home happy.

We have seen a lot of fuel filler necks warped causing the problem. Not on a RAV but Tacomas and 4runners.
