1998 VW Beetle - Accelerates On Its Own

Post by Ricky »

I have a customer who has a 1998 VW Beetle with a 2.0 engine.

The car will throttle on its own & the pedal will actually move too? There is no check engine light on for any codes so I would love to know if maybe any of you may of ever had this same problem & could help me with it?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks Ricky

Confirm please..this vehicle has no throttle cable, correct. All electronic? Have you done a throttle body relearn yet? That's the first thing I'd do.

The car came with cruise control when new. As far as the cable? You are right about being electronic but for the relearn? Will they need to go to the dealer to get the system relearned? I do know that she said it was doing this for a couple of years now & that her niece had the pedal sensor replaced back then but it would still do this so when she asked me about it I told her that I would post something on here. I work on her tractor & trailers & do her service work on her other cars & she just got this car from her niece so now here I am trying to help my customer out? LOL..
I really appreciate any input, thanks Ricky

Most aftermarket scanners will do the relearn. Even the old Snap-On 2500 brick had the option.

Thanks Rick, I will check to see if my old snap on has that! I can't remember even if it had the import section on mine? I do have a Genisis, do you think it would perform that relearn?

Probably. One of my guys has a Mentor and I think it does it. It should say something like Throttle Relearn or Adaptive. This is a good starting point. Any time I have one of these with idle concerns it's the first thing I do. Good luck.

would the pedal actually move. i've never heard of that before. it's a driver that sends only. it doesn't move the throttle by applying pressure..........

I am going to try looking through the Genisis to see if it will do that & Ric, just wanted to let you know that I looked up your web site & you have a very nice place & a nice web site too!!
Steven, as far as the pedal moving? Yes it does! It actually did it with me one time while I was driving, I was coming up to a red light & started letting my foot off & the pedal just started applying but it was like for a breif 2 seconds & released? Thats why I was hoping that maybe someone on here had this happen to them & could help me because it is my first for sure, thanks Ricky
