2002 VW Jetta - A/C Compressor Issue

Post by Goose »

I have a 2002 Jetta with a 2.0 AZG engine. The problem is that the A/C clutch engages on low blower only but is inoperative in all the other speeds. If you swich to the other speeds the A/C light on the dash goes out and the compressor quits. I have a Solus ultra and am not able to get any codes. I printed a wiring diagram and don't see any correlation as to what is happening. No tsb's on this issue either and mitchell has no dignostics that I can find.

Does the blower work on all speeds? From the diagram, it appears that the AC switch gets fed power through the blower switch and resistor. It looks like direct feed on low then it feeds through the blower resistor on other speeds. Check terminal 2 wht/blk wire at the back of the dash control panel for power when switching speeds. You should have power there at all speeds except off. If not, your problem lies in the switch or resistor. Check there first.

The more I look at this diagram the more I'm convinced there is a problem in the blower resistor or the connection there.

I checked that wire at the back of the switch and when you increase the speed the power goes bye bye. I have the dash apart and will check the resistor. The blower does work on all speeds. Thanks for the input. I will report back after more testing.

Yup. That wire is fed by the blower resistor on all the other speeds aside from low.

I shorted from a power source at the resisor to the white black and it worked on all speeds. Replaced the resistor and all is well. Again.....Thanks for the input.

Thanks for posting the fix. I've never actually seen this problem before, but am now ready for one to come in. :D
