Database Backup Destination Doesn't Hold

Post by ricmorin »

At first we thought it was us, but it has happened enough times now that there must be something to it. We back up nightly to a flash drive. My SA's flash generates drive D and mine generates an F. This means we sometimes have to change the location. On Friday my SA did the backup, and today the location is back to F. It should have stayed at D.

Is this a documented issue or am I the only one?

We are thinking backup location path or drive letter would not change as far as SE is concerned. Is that what we're talking about here?

Not sure why the OS would assign different drive letters to a thumb drive inserted into the same USB port.

Yes. The path sometimes changes back to previous after a restart. Not sure why the two thumbs have a different drive letter, but they do.

2nd level: "I’m sure Ric has a user selected, right? Can he replicate the issue each time?"

Yes, users are selected. LOL. I have 4 users just for me, depending on where I'm sitting and what I'm doing. Does the destination change from user to user or is it global? That could be the link if it does.

The issue is not repeatable on a regular basis. Happens very sporadically.

We were not thinking it changed; please note User profile in play so that we may see if there is a pattern to this.

Right. I'll confirm users along with next occurrence and report back.

Re: Database Backup Destination Doesn't Hold

Well, I just went back to see if the user selection changes the backup destination. I changed the destination last night to D and it's back to F right now. For some strange reason this setting is not holding for us.

The user selection appears to have no bearing on the backup destination.

I just changed it back to D, ran a backup and re-opened the program and it's still at D. For now.

Has anyone entertained the idea of a backup button that would ask for a destination as part of an immediate process? This backup at startup or shutdown seems a little old-school to me. The new backup is lengthy compared to 5.9. And if your destination is not available or not as you thought, then you have to start the program again and find out what went wrong. I'm willing to bet that if it didn't run correctly, some users may just choose to skip it altogether. (My SA admits to doing that a few times) I guess what I'm saying is the backup process feels a little clunky to me.

Ha! Just got in and opened Manager. Didn't change users, just went straight to backup. It's back to F again. There's a ghost in my machine.

If there are no other reports of this, maybe there's something system-wise causing this,

Assuming you are using Windows 7, assign a static Drive Letter to both thumb drives. Drive letters are dynamic.

Hi everyone,

I just saw this thread and I have been having the EXACT same problem Ric is. Randomly the drive letter assignment in the Mitchell program will change to one used previously. I thought it must be a bug but have just been putting up with it. Problem is, you don't find out it changed until the backup is generated and the computer can't find the desired drive. If there is a fix you can reach out to me at 618-833-2528

I'm aware of a static drive letter assignment, which is what I did. That cured the 'symptom', but likely has not resolved the problem within Manager. :? We'll see if the letter changes now that both thumbs are set, but I'll guess that it won't. Seems changing the drive within Manager is what triggers the issue.

Very strange. If you and Gerald would:

Open the ShopstreamXt.config file located in c:\programdata\m1-sk\ShopstreamXt. If prompted, choose to open with Notepad.
Ctrl+F or look through this file for the setting <AutoBackupPath>.
1. Let me know if that's the good one, or the old one.
2. Change it to match your desired location.
Be careful not to change anything else in this file. It can be recreated if needed, but perhaps making a copy somewhere else to start would be best.

I do not see that anywhere in the file. I also searched for backup and path, nothing.

Well, what it really doesn't explain is where your second value is coming from. There's only one in the database. I checked yours specifically, and there's only one. My theory was you were sometimes being set back to the config value. As a technical concept, what you're experiencing doesn't seem possible now. :?

Are you taking a backup home to work on it sometimes?
