Does GL Code Really Matter?

Post by Rich »

We do not synch Mitchell with anything like Excell. I have been picking at the GL codes in an attempt to get a report that I can use for EOD.

As I "tweek" things, I was wondering, does the GL code I use for something really matter? Again, we do not export to ANYTHING.

We had a car come in last week for an insurance job, and charged storage. That fee showed up no where, even in an incorrect area.

it is a classification system to keep revenue data organized and drive reports in a consistent manner. It means that even without integrating to anything external you can expect monies to be where you expect them to. If you start to apply them in a willy-nilly fashion this would no longer be true depending on the date range you run the report for. (some counted here, oh some counted over there... I think)

They're not frivolous, I would not introduce uncertainty.

Ok here is my "issue" (one that Mitchell can fix)

I have core return set to GL code 40700. "On the Revenue by GL code" report GL code 40700 says "unassigned". Right now I have a -30.00, which is correct. But if we miss something and it goes into "unassigned" this figure is wrong. Is there a proper Gl code for core return/credit??

In the past I had changed the Description from Unassigned to "core returns", however that change did not follow to my report.

I have been adding up the EOD figures since we got this system. Not ever had a Mitchell report match my figures. I am trying to stop that so i can be more efficient.

While you can play with GL Code descriptions, unassigned is NOT one of them. It's a system value that serves as a catch all. You know how some folks added their own 'Charge' entry to payment options? It's kind of like that.

There is no specific proper GL # for cores (other than don't use Unassigned).

So in my one photo it appears i made up one for Freight, as they all end in Zeros except freight which i made 40711. Will the system crash, or world quit spinning, if i make up something for core return? say 40712?

ANYTHING other that using Unassigned is fine.

The danger is that items that are truly unassigned (manual entry or change that results in an existing GL code not being assigned) is going to dump on top of core $ figures or whatever is sitting in there.
