Jeep VIN Engines Not Matching Up?

Post by nickscarcare »

I have a Jeep in here and in my Mitchel the VIN does not match up to the drop down for the engine size. VIN is 2j4fy59m3kj106658. That decodes as a 4.0 Jeep Laraedo, but Mitchell has only a 4.2 Vin T. I am running 5.9.5.250
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

Consulting additional resources (Engine ID books, interchange manuals, etc.) the 'M' in the Jeep Wrangler VIN is a 6-258 (4.2L) engine in 1989. Are you sure it's all original?

Wikipedia adds:The YJ used a 2.5 L AMC 150 I4 or optional 4.2 L AMC 258 I6 until 1991. That year (1991), a fuel-injected 180 hp (134 kW) 4.0 L AMC 242 variant replaced the 112 hp (84 kW) 4.2 L 258 CID straight-6. The NP207 transfer case was used only for 1987 and replaced by the NP231.

It seems that for 1989-1990 there are two valid engine options for 6-4.2L:
VIN M 6-258 (4.2L) [Low Compression]
VIN T 6-258 (4.2L)

I will pass this along to the editorial department.
