Decoding Via Tags?

Post by Pauls Automotive »

I was wondering if SE can decode a vehcile via the tags? I thought I had read something about that. Maybe it was a future update.

I am doing that right now. I have a Bluetooth scanner working as a keyboard wedge. Scan the vin for entry, but........

Mitchell has locked the vin field character count to 17. My setup is primitive as it doesn't ignore the first character in some cases so it adds the first extra character and drops the last. For now I scan into the color field first, then paste over to the vin field without the first character. Still faster than entering it by hand.

I have asked them to open that field to more than 17.

Ideally an integrated solution would preferable.

Thanks Ric. Yeah I had tried that in the past and had the same result. In the enterprise edition you could just enter the tags # hit decode and it would auto fill the vin and other information. It was a nice tool. I could have sworn I had seen it on here before as at least a future update. I guess I was mistaken.

This is kinda off track but not sure a new post is really needed.

I notice the newer GM no longer has the barcode in the VIN plate at the windshield. I see nothing on the door. Where are they putting the barcode at?

Hi Paul,

Mobile Manager Pro, an add-on tool for Mitchell1, features VIN scan/decode and license plate decode. Please let me know if you have any other questions or need further assistance.

They are using a QR or 2D barcode now. My setup is not capable, yet.

I purchased an inexpensive model to try things out first. Only spent about 70 bucks. Take a look at this 2D USB scanner. It's a little pricey but will likely scan directly to the VIN field today.

http://www.vintrack.com/2Dscanners.htm

Scroll to Item #USB2D.

What's nice about this one is it will also retrieve the vin from most registrations. The vin on those are buried in with a lot of other data.

I have tried scanning that with my phone because it will do QR but I have never had any luck with it being able to read it since it's so small. I guess I better try again.

I've found that scanning off of my phone will only work occasionally. It seems that my I phone sometimes for reasons unknown fades the code on both sides and only the middle is crisp enough when I expand it enough to be scanned. However my son and two techs use different phones with bigger screens and it works. My phone is the older I phone with the smaller screen. As we all know this is the extent of my knowledge so I really can't expand any further on this subject :?

Just wanted to chime in to say that plate-toVIN decoding is on our product roadmap for Manager SE. It's a little early to commit to any timeframe however.

Haha! I just realized what the OP meant by 'tags'. We don't use that term widely here in the northeast. We call them plates.

Sorry for derailing this thread. Thank you Dan for pulling me in!

Just saw this post. We use the plate decoding functionality in Mobile Manager Pro every day I believe. It's a very useful feature - tech enters the plate and decodes it and Bingo! the VIN appears like magic in the database field in shop management.
