Part ID for Inventory Material

What is the use case or purpose of creating Part IDs on an Inventory Material record?
When you are in an inventory material card and you click on the words "Part Number" you will see another window pop up to an additional Code and a Part Number.
This is beneficial if you have a alternate part numbers or cross referenced part information, in turn giving you options for sourcing a part when applicable.
