Does anybody know how to R&R the starter on a 83 Chevy Chevette with a 1.6L gas engine with a manual transmission? This has got to be a nightmare so far as I can see. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

I used to do them a lot years ago....From what I can remember if it did not have power brakes it was not too bad but with power brakes it was tough. I'm assuming your has power brakes. I would unbolt the master cylinder from the booster but leave lines connected and move it as much as possible to give me some clearance. Then after unbolting the starter I would wiggle it up through the gap I created. It isn't easy but that was the best way I could find to do that job......I didnt think there were any of these out on the road anymore. Haven't seen one in years.

Yes it it. Unbolt the master from the firewall and pull it up out of the way. The lines should stretch enough to allow the necessary clearance. Unhook the fuel line and bend out of the way. Bend heat shield at carb out of the way and the starter will come out.

No power brakes and a carb!!! what are these things you speak of? Haha, it would be awesome to see a shovevette in the great north east but I think they all went the way of the yugo

I used to be able to buy these things for 50-100 dolloars ...invest 200 and sell for 1200-1500. I hated the cars but made a lot of money selling them Its how I got diapers and food for the kid

That's funny. Ya ought to see the gem I'm working on. Looks like the one Pershing rode on into France at the end of WW1.

Actually, once the brake master cylinder was out of the way, it was fairly easy. Thanks guys for the tips.
