2011 Chev HHR - Electronic Steering

Post by brianp87 »

Head scratcher. SO ive read all the horror stories on there power steering. Well this vehicle losses power steerign off and on losses communication from power steering module. module is part of column. Has power and ground to module and wires to bcm are ok. Replace column and new column is dead all the time nothing at all other one was intermitent. lol I read they recalled the cobalt columns supposidly same column but not these. But damn this makes me crazy when you get bad new parts from gm. Anyone seen or heard of this. Another column in 2 days away due to time of the day

Does it need to be programmed? It is a module replacement.........................

My ex-GM guy seems to remember programming those. Not saying for sure, but he thinks it may need to be programmed.

If you have a valid TIS subscription, you can go in and see if that module comes up in the list of programmable modules.

Yeah, I hate that.

BTW, you can now get short term (2-3 day) programming for GM for 55 bucks. Just did one last week.

Ok got new column in and all is well. No programming was needed. What a pain and such my luck to get 2 bad ones in a row.

The motor was but the column was new. The recall is for the motor. The column was oroginally replaced by dealer two days before I saw it. I sent it there in the hopes they would warrnaty it for a clunk noise in the column. He went to pick it upo and it had no p/s and had the error on dash. They said all was good and sent him on his way. Took 2 from gm for me to get a good column(module). I did the motor since it was effected by the recal for cobalts and in canada hhr's have been recalled all for the same part #. The module was our problem it was dead most of the time.

Would it help to call the dealer and ask if it needs programmed? If your dealer is not friendly please forward any info I may need, I will be more than happy to call our local (friendly) dealer and ask.
