1984 Merc Lynx - Won't Run

Post by qbeecw »

1984 Lynx won't run after it warms up. It seems like it is in the ignition system but tech can't figure it out. He has rebuilt the carb and replaced EGR Ign coil, plugs, dist, rotor?? drove it down the road and back then it would not start, Poltergiest! Stumped!

Has a compression test been done? I seem to remember these heads having a valve seat problem, or a lack of retaining one.

TFI modules were popular on these.

If i remember correctly there is a solenoid on the side of the carb that acts as a shut down. The exposed portion looks like an ignition condenser or for the younger group one of those short stubby camera battery with a wire coming out of the top of it. Unplugging it will do no good, you need to remove it and cut off the ram portion of it the screw the body back in. It's designed as an anti dsl switch and the damn things would do just what you described. We never looked into the control part of the system, cutting off the ram solved all the issues. We also had issues with the pick up in the distributor. No mention other than the tech thinking it's an ignition problem, is there spark or not? Will it fire if carb cleaner is sprayed into the throttle body. Need to know these things to really help.
never argue with a fool, they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience
