2005 Volvo XC90 - Engine R&R

Post by Jeff @ Able Auto »

Got a customer wants a quote for engine r&r. Got times but went to check proceduer to be sure it was within our scope. No r&r info. Anyone done one of these and do we need anything special, trans alignment tools and the such? Customer is bidding on it and aint sure if its an 8 or 5 cylinder. Thanks folks, Jeff.

Tim the customer aint sure wat it is. He wanted a highball est just to know where he stands money wise. I just want to be sure we can handle it. Dont see a lot of Volvos here, but this guy is a decent customer. Buys cars brings em in we fix em up and he drives em a while before he sells em. This would be my first Volvo engine and I thought in the past there were alignment tools and such necessary to do a proper install.

Just took a look at the procedure quickly....didn't see anything unusual. Engine/trans/cradle come down as an assembly. Times vary quite a bit depending on what you have.....

FWD 5cyl: 12 hours
AWD 5cyl: 12 hours
AWD 6cyl: 22 hours
AWD 8cyl: 11 hours

The 2.5T / T6 / V8 badges should be visible on the back gate!

customer is bidding on it and doesn't know what it is but wants you to give him a high ball estimate. mmmmmmm, lets see here. did it run out of oil and trash the turbo? is it seized, making it more difficult to remove. any common under carriage damage that will make it difficult to reinstall the engine. had air induction been damaged below the radiator, did it over heat and blow the radiator? want a ball park figure? sure here goes, my estimate is orange.

Thanks guys. I hear ya Steve. BUT...this guy has drug em in before. First one I did for him I was a bit unsure, but he paid the tab, no questions. Now that I have done a few I dont think it will be a problem. HIs theory is take the est and double it. If he can still get the car right and add that figure and drive it a while and sell for a small profit hes happy. And it is fill work. He brings em in and we have 6-8 weeks to finish it. Thanks again.

OK got this piece into the shop..engine finally came in. Really nervous as this is my first rodeo on one of these. I generally shy away from the europeans but its been slow. We'll see how it goes. If anyone has experienced one of these and has any insight it would be appreciated!

Jeff,

There is a fill plug on the RH side near the front output shaft. Fill to the hole with Volvo fluid pn 1161648. :D

Just an update...Completed the engine install Friday and performed road test. Pulled in to the bay to recheck fluids and hood release cable let go. Installed cable yesterday and road tested again, got O2 codes. Customer wanted to drive car for a week and bring it back for follow up. Not a bad job...took our time, labeled all connectors, took boxes and punched holes for bolts and labeled them. Would do another one...just wish I woulda had more info to go on.

The final episode on the engine install. Customer brought vehicle back for follow up. At first I didnt have the Volvo key for my Solus. Ordered it before customer returned. Scanned ecm and wala...code for o2 sensors switched. It ran good but had a miss at idle. Switched o2 sensors and all ran fine. Sensors go in before turbos and are only a few inches apart. Correctly plugged in, just screwed into wrong ports. Customer came by yesterday and picked up his old engine and told me it runs great...very pleased. Thanks again folks for your help.
