I would make sure the breather isn't plugged first. If this is the first time you've pulled a vvt pulley i would follow the timing belt guide. You need a tool to lock the cams. It may be the vvt pulley leaking as well.

I believe that is normal. With no hydrolic pressure in them they can move free. We have done a few of these and they all ove free. Folloow the reassebly procedure very closely. Also as Steve mentioned maked sure they are not leaking as we have run into that as well.

Again, you need to be extremely careful when doing this. You can get away changing a timing belt if you'r super careful without any special tools. HOWEVER if you take gears off they need to be set to factory specification. The outer gear is set up , locked to the hub, belt is installed and than gear bolts are loosened and hub set. If it's not done correctly you'll have a power issue.

My tool sits and collects dust but once or twice a year when i need it i have it. If you don't need to remove the gear and are real careful the belt can be replaced. I've had more than a few but less than a bunch come into my shop with power issues and a fuel mileage drop after another shop changed the belt.
