2004 Ford Explorer - ABS

Post by steven kiser »

Good morning all. The shop is super busy and I'm starting to get a bit testy. Yeah, that's the word testy, even if others choose to use others. But, I just purchased a 04 Exploder from a customer. Actually, we agreed on me taking it for payment for work on one of his other cars. The situation is that three or four years ago the rear diff blew. I can't remember the exact specifics but a diff was installed from a vehicle that didn't have four wheel abs and this truck did. I think it was the only one we could get quick enough so his son could go somewhere and he didn't care he just wanted it to move. This was a spare to the spare car. So now that it's mine I was hoping that someone could tell me if I could drop this diff and install a toner ring or are the pinion gears on the non abs set up not machined to take the ring. I can bring it in and pull the cover to look but I know if I don't repair it then it will get pushed out and sit with the others I own waiting to be brought back into the shop to be finished and sold. That lot of misfit vehicles is getting bigger and bigger   I can probably call the dealer and ask the parts department but the good old parts guys are starting to retire and the new ones are great at the computer but have no idea about how the parts or the vehicles work.

To the best of my memory the tone ring is part of the carrier, you would also need a hole to install the sensor into also.

Sounds like a truck that needs to be sold sans ABS.....

I wouldn't do that. I believe all the diffs have a sensor port and from what I see I should be able to install the toner ring in this did. I checked with Ford and there is no difference in the part # for the ring gear for abs or non abs. I ordered the toner ring from Ford and will let you know how it works out.

The ring isn't there on all. They, or so I'm told are all set up to receive it so I'm hoping this is true and have ordered the toner ring from Ford.
