2004 Ford F150 - 5.4L Cam Phasers

Post by nickscarcare »

I have a customer that has this truck and is looking at having the phasers replaced due to some noise in the engine. He just bought the truck. My question is that is the tools I need for this in the big OTC 6489 set or is there more that I need to do this job.
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

Well, that is the set that I have and have used it extensively on setting up the Ford engines. One thing I did and you may also want to get is a Ford Rotunda Tool # 303-448 which is a tool that goes on the front end of the crankshaft when you are setting up the timing chains. I finally broke down and got it as it was a royal pain to keep the crankshaft from turning while doing timing chain work.

Good Luck. hth

It also says you need the 303-1046, am I just not seeing that tool in the big ford kit?

Yeah, it's weird. I have the first extra tool and a variant of the second for a Lightning. Guess they don't include them.

Well, I looked and I don't have that one yet and neither is it in the big kit. I guess I'll have to get it. Thanks for the info.

Have you guys done these phasers? Is there a better kit to get than the ones from the dealers? The customer says he seen Comp Cams?? sells an kit for them, supposedly better. I also told him that he will need to only run a oem filter and 5-20 oil, as other filters may not have the right check valves in them. I have not done the phasers on these yet, but have looked into them as I know they are a common problem. Just wondering of there is better longer lasting parts out there for these.
