2007 GMC G3500 - Jasper Engine
Hi folks. Looking for some input on this one. TIA.
We got us a 2007 GMC G3500 with a 6.0. We put a Jasper engine in this in Sept 2012, 42k ago. Recently it came in with a misfire and CEL flashing. Misfires mostly were number 1 cylinder, so I took the plg out and it was nearly shorted with ash deposts. The engine hasn't been using any unusual amounts of oil, maybe 1 quart in 3000 miles, has had an oil change every 3k, but does have some coolant usage. We did find some hoses seeping cold, but the consumption continues.
We've opened a claim with Jasper and they are having me do a block test (not sure why) and a pressure test to watch cylinder 1. I will try and post pics.

Re: 2007 GMC G3500 - Jasper Engine
I like Jasper products but have not had a lot of luck with their tech support in finding issues. It seems like they just have you run through the basics which I always do before calling in. If I'm calling its a tough one and I just want to test what they want to confirm a defective part so they don't have any issues later. I'm sure you are in the same boat with this one. I know these have a valve cover issue for oil consumption but I thought Jasper corrected this in theirs? I'll be watching to see what happens.

Yeah, I've done the basics. The stuff Jasper wants me to do seems weird.
Has anyone seen coolant produce ash deposits?

Well neither have I, but I suppose some of the additives 'could' do it. Otherwise it's oil, which is what I suspect. Now from where? Stems or rings?

Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with a piece of chalk, cut it with an axe. Sand it to fit.

Are these the ones that had issues with the converters close to the engine that the converter would break apart and from exhaust pulsations would get sucked into the engine? I have seen that happen already.

That's a distinct possibility, however, that TSB does not show for my vehicle. I'm investigating further. Thanksbrianp87 wrote:I see this but Idk

Re: 2007 GMC G3500 - Jasper Engine
A different service information provider DOES show this TSB for my vehicle. I didn't check both. Interesting. I'll check the valve cover and report back. Thanks again.

The updates that Jasper does is listed on their web site. If you can find it in their new "user friendlier site" which is an oxymoron, because it sucks more than the last one did.

I'm not sure whether it came with valve covers or not. I think not but I will check.

I'm sorry this is off topic but Snap On's new web site is the same way. It's worst than the old one and the old one wasn't that great. Having a user friendly web site would be top priority to me.Rich wrote:The updates that Jasper does is listed on their web site. Re: 2007 GMC G3500 - Jasper Engine
And here I thought it was just me navigating through the "NEW AND IMPROVED" website. I truly believe the support guys are there for the back yard guys or the shops that are just working on engines because they have to and are out of their element. Like anything else when I first was "forced" into engine and transmission swaps it was horrific. Now we do 5 or 6 a month and make a buck at it. I would look closely at the back of the heads on this one. I've seen a bunch where coolant seeps out, runs down the block face and burns off. All I've ever found is the stain from the coolant never any visible sign of fluid. It's almost like it leaks only at a certain temperature.

Re: 2007 GMC G3500 - Jasper Engine
If you take the valve cover off look closely at the rocker arm and see if it's off center of the valve stem head. I've seen this before but I can't remember if it was on a jasper product. After removing the head we found the valve was walking in the guide. If the gasket is leaking then the head has to be yanked anyway. I learned to take detailed pictures when dealing with any warranty issues from any company. If Jasper decides to warranty heads only post it and I'll give you a call.ricmorin wrote:Well neither have I, but I suppose some of the additives 'could' do it. Some of the units have a spacer on the rear of the crank that must be
removed and installed on the JASPER engine. This spacer can be stuck
and not easily removed, so please plan accordingly for proper
installation of this part (if equipped).
*******************************************************************
NOTE: This unit does NOT include the balancer & therefore does NOT
need to be included on the exchange core.
*******************************************************************
External oil coolers can be impossible to clean. Contamination from a
previous failure can cause debris to lodge in the original cooler. We
recommend the cooler be replaced. Proof of a cooler purchase may be
required if bearing failure occurs on your new engine.
********************************************************************
The plastic intake manifold must be thoroughly cleaned of oil and
debris to reduce the possibility of engine contamination. Failure to
do so may void the warranty.
********************************************************************
--New head bolts are installed to ensure proper clamp load and
durability. This will reduce leaks and head gasket issues.
--A roughcast area on the top of the piston in the years 1999 - 2003
had a tendency to lead to engine knock, loss of power, and/or
hesitation. JASPER is using a piston that has a machined smooth top
to prevent this problem from occurring, providing the customer with a
smoother running engine.
Valve cover left drivers side - On high mileage vehicles or vehicles
with high oil consumption it my be necessary to replace the left side
valve cover. The PCV baffle on the inside of the valve cover can
become clogged and keep the PCV valve from doing its job properly.
The PCV orifice is sized for each vehicle so you will need to contact
your local GM dealer for the correct valve cover part #. The wrong
valve cover could set a SES light.

Re: 2007 GMC G3500 - Jasper Engine
Yes sir, that's certainly looks like it may be the cause. This particular job was unusual as we were undoing a botched engine job from another shop, so many variables exist here that wouldn't normally. We ran into a lot of unprofessional things along the way and the other shop was unwilling to set things straight, so we are.
Thanks again for bringing this up.
